I love quotes. I collect them like kids collect interesting bits and pieces. I am inspired and encouraged by the nuggets that people have written down through out the ages. I have so many that I love it’s hard to pick a favorite. Leadership, travel, friendship & self-development are the themes that run through the quotes I love. I leave you with a short list of some that continue to inspire me and provoke deep thought.

My favorites of the moment

The unexamined life is not worth living. ~ Socrates
I came across this quote some years ago and it has stayed with me, through two deployments, a cross-country journey and change of country. If I had to pick this would be one of two that would be listed as my favorites.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit. ~ Aristotle
I often fall short of this sentiment but it is a reminder to complete every endeavor to the best of my ability

Execute every act of your life as though it was your last. ~ Marcus Aurelius
I’m not so good at adhering to this one but I think it’s okay. I think for the major things in life, or those that you are passionate about, this something to keep in mind.

We gain our first measure of intelligence when we admit our own ignorance. ~ Socrates
I am a know it all who hates being wrong. I need this one in my life to remind me that I don’t know it all and it’s okay to be wrong sometimes. I am not perfect. And that is okay.

Let the world know you as you are, not as you think you should be; because sooner or later, if you are posing then where are you? ~ Fanny Brice
I discovered this quote when I was deployed. Some people thought I was fake because I maintained a reserve and rarely let them see the fun, crazy side to me. But hello, we were in the Al-Anbar before the surge. Fun & crazy need to stay home while, watchful, circumspect & dedicated need to come out to play. I questioned myself for a time but this quote encouraged me. I also accepted that like a precious gem we are all multifaceted and how the light hits the stone determine how much fire or ice you see. Every thing isn’t always revealed and there is nothing wrong with that.

Be what you are. Give what is yours to give. Have style. Dare. ~ Stanley Kunitz
This is from something he wrote for his daughter. I don’t have that kind of relationship with my father so these are words that resonate with me. They also affirm for me the desire to have children in traditional marital relationship. I want my children to have what I did not. Daddy.

Line from Riddle of Strider, LOTR. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost

Not all those who wander are lost. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
As I began this journey of adventure and travel I rediscovered the above quote from Tolkien. If you don’t know you will learn, that I love Tolkien’s Middle Earth. I have huge bound copies of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings as well as the trilogy on DVD. Those are my “Precious!” Hee hee. I am also eagerly awaiting the release of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
~J.R.R. Tolkien

I have many more quotes in my journal. I also have quotes written every where. Any book I have for notes, ends up having at least one quotation written on the fly. These are just a smattering of the quotes I’ve amassed over the years.

Do you collect quotes like I do? What are some of your favorites and how do they inspire you?

  1. Hello from a fellow quote junkie! I have been collecting quotes for as long as I can remember, and literally have notebooks full of them. One of my favorites is this one by Helen Keller: “The best and most beautiful things in the world can not be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”

    • Hi Purple Dreamer,

      Welcome to my purple kingdom. 😀

      I love that Helen Keller quote and I agree, the best things are felt with the heart. I also think the best experiences and those shared with people with whom you have a heart connection.
